It has been a few weeks since the KEPSA SME Conference, and I have now had time to reflect on the many discussions that took place over those two days.
This year’s theme was “Beyond Survival: Building Smart and Resilient Businesses.” For business owners in Kenya, this is more than a conference tagline; it reflects daily realities. Operating in survival mode is challenging. Progress requires effective structures, accessible capital, and practical tools. For example, one Nairobi-based SME shared how implementing a basic cloud accounting system allowed them to better track expenses, streamline invoicing, and present organized financial records to lenders, which made it easier to access funding.
The strong turnout and candid discussions at the event were significant. At EldoHub, we have spent years supporting founders in digitizing, becoming investor-ready, and building sustainable businesses. Engaging with so many entrepreneurs allowed us to learn firsthand what is effective and, more importantly, what challenges remain.
I spoke with many founders who are doing impressive work but face recurring challenges: securing funding, integrating technology within limited budgets, and adapting to rapidly changing markets. Broader discussions on policy and market access reinforced the daily realities we observe. African SMEs are not just topics for discussion; they are the driving force sustaining the economy.
One next step for founders looking to address these challenges is to explore resources like the SME Hub at EldoHub, which offers mentorship programs and practical workshops on digitization and access to finance. Taking advantage of such support can be an immediate way to begin building resilience and set a foundation for future growth.
I left the conference inspired by the determination of the participants. The commitment to building sustainable businesses is clear. Significant work remains to ensure founders have the infrastructure needed to scale. However, the enthusiasm at the event suggests we are moving in the right direction. I invite all founders and stakeholders to continue the conversation beyond the conference. Let us connect, share experiences, and support one another as we build resilient businesses together.
Thank you to everyone who visited our booth to share your ideas, challenges, and successes. Let us continue building together.
